All top five markets have benefitted from a historically strong domestic and leisure demand base, which has demonstrated its resilience during the Covid-19 crisis due to a rise in Staycations. With continued overseas travel restrictions in place during much of 2021, we observe a stronger recovery across destinations offering a wealth of leisure attractions and recreational activities, including both seaside resorts and city centre locations such as Bath and Exeter. Although not included as part of our analysis, we would expect other coastal resort towns in the UK, as well as countryside destinations to have also performed extremely well during the year.
Losers
25. London
24. Birmingham
23. Edinburgh
22. Cambridge
21. Reading
Markets across the UK that have experienced slower paces of recovery during 2021 include destinations which generally rely heavily on international tourism, as well as MICE and corporate related demand. We note that foreign visitation for the majority of the bottom five markets reflect over 35% of total travel, whilst business and MICE related travel also accounts for a significant portion of total demand.
